The default orientation
Rank 8, at the top, is Black's side. Rank 1, at the bottom, is White's side. This is the view from White's side of the board: the way a player sitting behind the white pieces would see it.

Files are labeled a to h along the bottom (or top) of the board, left to right. Ranks are labeled 1 to 8 along the side, bottom to top. Together, a letter and a number name exactly one square: e4, d5, g7...
